Multirate Simulation for High Fidelity Haptic Interaction with Deformable Objects in Virtual Environments

چکیده
Haptic interaction is an increasingly common form of interaction in virtual environment (VE) simulations. This medium introduces some new challenges. In this paper we study the problem arising from the difference between the sampling rate requirements of haptic interfaces and the signi cantly lower update rates of the physical models being manipulated. We propose a multirate simulation approach which uses a local linear approximation. The treatment includes a detailed analysis and experimental veri cation of the approach. The proposed method is also shown to improve the stability of the haptic interaction.

High Fidelity Haptic Rendering of Frictional Contact with Deformable Objects in Virtual Environments using Multi-rate Simulation
Haptics is an increasingly common modality in human-computer interfacing. The focus of this paper is the problem arising from the difference between the high sampling rate requirements of haptic interfaces and the significantly lower update rates for physical models simulated in virtual environments. This is a critical problem, especially for applications involving haptic manipulation of deform...
متن کاملA Multirate Approach to Haptic Interaction with Deformable Objects Single and Multipoint Contacts
In this paper we describe a new solution for stable haptic interaction with deformable object simulations featuring low servo rates and computational delays. The solution presented is a combination of the local model and the virtual coupling concepts proposed in the past. By varying the local model impedance depending on the local stiffness of the deformable object, the interaction between loca...
متن کاملDynamic Local Models for Stable Multi-Contact Haptic Interaction with Deformable Objects
This paper describes a new technique for allowing multiple users to haptically interact with a set of deformable slowly-simulated objects in a stable manner. Stability has been approached in the past by various researchers using passivity theory in order to avoid having to model the human operator closing the haptic loop. None of these solutions however can work well without the use of high upd...
متن کاملTelesurgery and Surgical Simulation: Haptic Interfaces to Real and Virtual Surgical Environments
In this paper, telesurgery and surgical simulation are introduced as parallel research problems of haptic interfacing to real and virtual surgical environments. The analytical tools of systems and control theory and robotics are used to address several research problems in these areas. The discussion on telesurgery is centered around the UC Berkeley/UC San Francisco Laparoscopic Telesurgical Wo...
متن کاملRealistic Haptics Interaction in Complex Virtual Environments
Simulating interactive behavior of objects such as soft tissues in surgical simulation or in control engine of VR applications has been extensively studied. Adding haptic information such as vibration, tactile array, force feedback simulation enhances the sense of presence in virtual environments. Recreating the realistic contact forces the user would perceive when interacting the virtual objec...
